World's First Global Web Conference Gets a < head > Start

Brighton, UK (PRWEB) September 4, 2008 -- The global web conference formerly known as Singularity will be called < head > following a trademark challenge. With two months to go, it was "a difficult but necessary decision to make", according to Aral Balkan, conference chair.

"We received a letter from Ansons attorneys, acting on behalf of a company called Singularity Limited that has apparently trademarked the name Singularity under Class 41, which is a broad class of services that conferences also fall under" said Balkan, "they don't have a conference called Singularity, but they have trademarked the name."

There was a last minute effort to reach an agreement which unfortunately did not succeed. "Our efforts to informally discuss a licensing agreement with Singularity Limited were rebuked with 'talk to our lawyers'", said Balkan, adding "we are a small company and a first-time conference and we don't have the time or budget to undertake a lengthy legal conversation with a much larger firm that's a Microsoft and IBM partner. Given that we are two months away from the conference we've decided to bite the bullet and change the name as soon as possible."

The < head > web conference announced the name change on Tuesday with a redesign of its new web site on Google App Engine.

The < head > web conference will take place live over the Internet on October 24-26, 2008 and boasts a speaker line-up of over 70 top web developers, designers, and thought leaders, including Tim O'Reilly, Lynda Weinman, Rafi Haladjian, Jason Fried, Gary Vaynerchuk, Robert L. Peters, Jeremy Keith, Robert Hoekman, Jr., Brendan Dawes, Hoss Gifford, Simon Willison, and Paul Boag.

To celebrate the name change, the < head > conference announced on Monday that it will be extending its early-bird pricing of $99 until the end of September. Regular tickets will be available after that time for $149.
